The Arrowhead fPVN Handbook on industrial semantics – Using IDO as upper ontology

The Arrowhead flexible Production Value Network (fPVN) project is a European R&D initiative on semantic interoperability across industrial data standards. The stated aim is to solve the many-to-many data mapping problem among different systems by aligning each standard once to a shared upper ontology. The Industrial Data Ontology (IDO, ISO 23726-3) serves as that shared upper ontology: domain standards align to IDO once, and interoperability follows. The following documents contain the Arrowhead fPVN project’s handbook for data modelers applying IDO:

  • Guidelines: A quick-start reference to the below documents. Start with this one if you are new to the concepts.

  • Handbook: Full rationale, methodology, ontology architecture, and pattern library overview.

  • Patterns: Normative, per-pattern specifications with reusable OWL and SHACL structures.

  • Use Cases: Worked examples: DEXPI pump lifecycle, power transformer, CFIHOS Semantics, and others.
